STUDENTathleteWorld Tours’ Tim Ryerson (left) and Richie Schueler (right) met at a recruiting event in 2005 as college basketball coaches at rival schools in North Carolina. On a contract basis, they were hired to coach international all-star teams. Combined they led seven international tours from 2006-2009. While leading the tours they noted not only how awesome the athletic experience was; but also the personal growth, team bonding, and leadership skills that developed in young athletes through the vehicle of international sports competition and travel.
As college basketball coaches, both were immersed in their coaching careers, spending time as players or coaches at a combined total of 10 NCAA Colleges and Universities in 7 States. In 2009, Tim had moved on to a new college coaching job in Nebraska and Richie had been promoted to the head coach at St. Andrews University. Tim was ready to leave coaching but didn’t really have any options to land on his feet until Richie mentioned in a phone call that he could always come back to North Carolina and sleep on his couch while he figured out the next step in his career. Well, Tim took Richie up on the offer and spent two months sleeping on Richie’s couch. It was during that time that Tim decided to start STUDENTathleteWorld. STUDENTathleteWorld began as a college athletic recruiting service designed to help high school athletes with the recruiting process. It was meant to be a temporary job until he got back into college coaching.
Two years later, Tim was still growing STUDENTathleteWorld as a college athletic recruiting business and it was Richie who was ready to leave college coaching. This time Tim returned the favor by offering Richie an opportunity working with STUDENTathleteWorld until he figured out his next step. Like Tim a few years earlier, it was meant to be a temporary job until he got back into college coaching.
The temporary jobs stuck for both Richie and Tim. STUDENTathleteWorld became a thriving business helping athletes all over the world. In 2014 they opened STUDENTathleteWorld Tours, a sister company of STUDENTathleteWorld that organizes international sports tours for youth and collegiate athletes.
Building on their experiences and a shared passion for athletics, travel, and developing youth, STUDENTathleteWorld Tours quickly became an industry leader in International sports travel.
In 2017, Jody Burrows, a former college basketball athlete and coach joined the SaWUSA team as the Director of Client Relations.

"We had a great time in Barbados. Truly a wonderful, rich, and life-changing experience for both of us (certainly for me). I believe that this trip prepared Will for his new college experience. We spent an absolutely superb day on the Catamaran Cruise. Lunch on the ocean and the highlight...swimming with the turtles. Just amazing! Thank you Barbados for your wonderful hospitality and the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful places on earth. And to STUDENTathleteWorld - congratulations! Job well done. These two coaches were a great pairing for this trip. Their personalities complemented each other, and they had two very different ways of dealing with the boys - which was very effective. The bitter part was saying goodbye to those boys. They all became my sons and it felt like I was sending them off on another very long trip. If asked what the best part of this vacation was for me, I'd say it was watching my son do something he loves in a very different environment, taking a chance to build new relationships (which are unbelievably strong after this trip), and to see his true gifts and talents reveal themselves so completely. The lesson in all of this - growth comes in discomfort. Your truth is displayed in situations that you cannot control, and when you can be happy with what you see when it does; that's a beautiful thing! Thinking about Will going off to college in a few short weeks, this was wonderful to see. We will continue to share our adventures with anyone you would like to learn more about our experience and the value in being part of such a great trip."
